All Shelters Closed from Tropical Storm Irene

All shelters in the State of Maine that were opened to assist the public during Tropical Storm Irene and its aftermath have now been closed.

15 shelters were opened in response to the storm, and another 17 were on standby prepared to open. American Red Cross chapters in Maine opened and staffed regional shelters in several locations in coordination with county and local officials. Additional locations were opened and run by local communities.

The shelter effort was supported by County Animal Response Teams that were mobilized to care for pets who accompanied their owners to shelters.

Restoration Details:
 Bangor Hydro crews are now out in full force addressing damage across the service territory. Damage has occurred rapidly over the last few hours and is expected to take some time to repair. Customers are encouraged to avoid going near power lines and trees near or touching them. Given the rapid nature of the falling trees, they could come down at any moment bringing power lines with them.

The Customer Service Center has been busy and additional Bangor Hydro employees have been trained and will assist with calls.

Restoration Details:
Bangor Hydro crews have been activated as the number of power outages related to Tropical Storm Irene begin to increase. Field and office staff have been gearing up for several days and are prepared for the worst. A small number of scattered outages began late this morning, but significant damage has not yet been reported.

As winds begin to increase, the public is asked to stay clear of fallen power lines and trees touching them. Power lines may be energized and fallen debris could come in contact with those lines at any time.
