A First Foray into Fermented Foods

A First Foray into Fermented Foods

What do sauerkraut, pickled eggs, and yogurt have in common?  A lot more than you might think!

I learn the coolest stuff from the "New Book Shelf" at the library.  I pick up books that pique my fancy, but that I would likely never go on the hunt for.

Incubating chicken eggs part 5 - Moving chics to brooder

Incubating chicken eggs part 5 - Moving chics to brooder

We moved the chics to the brooder the day after the hatch.  Sadly the other two eggs mentioned in this video did NOT hatch.  Not sure why.  They had pecked one hole but didn't get any further.  I opened the eggs and found fully developed chicks inside.  The only think I can think of is that these eggs got jostled and rolled around as the other chics hatched.  Maybe that dissoriented them?

Incubating chicken eggs part 4 - THE HATCH!

Incubating chicken eggs part 4 - THE HATCH!

It was hatch day yesterday and so far 4 out of 6 eggs have hatched.  Check out this awesome video!

Incubating Chicken eggs - Part 3 (Candling)

Incubating Chicken eggs - Part 3 (Candling)

I just candled my eggs and found that 6 out of the remaining 11 eggs are viable.  Not that great of an average really but it's what I have to work with.  When you candle eggs look for a dark shadow that moves around as you rotate the egg.  Also look for blood vessels criss crossing the shell.  We're just a day or two away from the hatch!

Bees - Dead!

Bees - Dead!

Sadly my bees did not make it through the winter.  It's hard to say exactly why.  Perhaps they were weak or diseased or perhaps the queen did not lay enough eggs to replace their numbers.  Maybe they just couldn't generate enough heat?  It's a major blow to me but I think I will try again!

Homemade Fish Fry!

Homemade Fish Fry!

I made fish sticks for my family the other night and though it would be a good video for Nate's Kitchen so I documented the process on video!  I'm using about a pound of cod for this recipe but any firm, white fish will do.  Enjoy!
