Nineteenth Annual Poinsettia Ball

Presented by R. H. Foster Energy and Machias Savings Bank

It is difficult to believe that 18 years have elapsed since the first Poinsettia Ball took place on a snowy Saturday back in 1992.  R. H.

Prolific and acclaimed writer David Madden will spend the day at the University of Maine on Monday, Nov. 1.   Louisiana State University's Robert Penn Warren Professor of Creative Writing, emeritus, Madden will visit with UMaine English
students and faculty members to share his insights and expertise on writing.  At 4 p.m., the University of Maine bookstore will host him for a reading and book signing.

Madden's new novel, "Abducted by Circumstance," is his tenth.  He was a Pulitzer Prize nominee for his 1978 novel, "The Suicide's Wife," a story that also became a television movie.  Arguably one of the most prolific writers in contemporary literature, Madden has produced numerous short stories, poems, essays, textbooks and scholarly works -- in addition to his novels -- in a career that has spanned more than 50 years.

Turkey-athon has nonprofit staff dressed like turkeys

Nonprofits in Washington County are conducting a Turkey-athon to collect turkeys for low-income folks' holiday dinners. Our own Susan Farley is going to dress up like a turkey tomorrow and stand in front of the Blue Bird Restaurant in Machias to collect donations. Other WHCA staff members will be dressed as a pea, a potato and a farmer. It is rumored that County Manager Betsy Fitzgerald will be a pea as part of the effort. There is a challenge to local police departments to donate 10 turkeys each if Susan pulls off this stunt.

The turkey and her friends will be in front of the Blue Bird Restaurant in Machias from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, October 22.

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Offers Flu Clinics

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital will be offering flu clinics through its Peninsula Primary Care practices located in Blue Hill, Bucksport, Castine, and Stonington.  Last year, many patients elected to receive separate immunizations to protect them against H1N1 and seasonal influenza.  This year, a single immunization will provide protection against both strains of the flu.

Blue Hill Family Medicine will offer a flu clinic on Friday, October 22 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  Patients who wish to receive an immunization at this location should call the practice at 374-2311 to schedule an appointment.

Island Family Medicine in Stonington will offer flu clinics on Tuesday October 19 and Thursday, October 21.  Both clinics will take place from 1:30 p.m.
