Looking to the Future with Opera House Arts

Winter board meeting in New York City featured meetings, events, auditions, and candidate interviews

Opera House Arts’ (OHA) board and staff members convened in New York City last week to conduct OHA’s annual winter board meetings, host a reception for patrons and artists, hold auditions for this summer’s production of Chekhov’s The Seagull, and complete a second round of interviews with candidates for the Producing Artistic Director position to succeed founder Linda Nelson.

“OHA’s future is looking very bright indeed,” said incoming board chair Bob Tobin. “We’re in a strong place, with new construction going well, a terrific season of programming planned, and a long list of highly-talented candidates to become our next Producing Artistic Director.”

The weekend kicked off with a cocktail reception at the Nancy Margolis Gallery in Chelsea and a shared theater experience of Duncan Macmillan’s acclaimed one-man show, Every Brilliant Thing, at the Barrow Street Theater.  During the Saturday meetings, the board adopted the 2014 financial statements, audited by Blue Hill Accounting LLC; received updates on the status of “Completing the Scene,” OHA’s capital campaign and building project; learned more about the education program and summer programming, all of which is online and available for ticket purchasing; and discussed the search process for OHA’s new Producing Artistic Director, which draws to a close in the next few weeks.

“We’ve very proud that 33 top notch candidates from around the country applied for this position,” said chair of the search committee and past board chair Richard Howe. “The candidates’ ranges of experiences were so great that it was an arduous process to narrow this field down, first to six finalists and now to two.”

The two finalists will be visiting the island in the ten days between March 14 and 24 to meet with the OHA staff and other Deer Isle-Stonington community members. There will be community pot-lucks on Sunday, March 15 and Sunday, March 22 at 5 p.m. at the Opera House to provide OHA’s Community Advisory Board members and other community guests with ample opportunity to meet and to provide feedback on the candidates. Following the Board meetings, OHA staff remained in Manhattan through the beginning of the week to hold auditions for this summer’s production of Anton Chekov’s The Seagull to be held at Ames Farm on Indian Point Road. The Seagull will be directed by Peter Richards, who serves on both the OHA Board of Directors and Artistic Advisory Board.
