Little River Lighthouse to Host Open Houses
Little River Lighthouse to Host Open Houses

The historic Little River Lighthouse, located on a 15-acre island off the coast of Cutler, Maine will host three Open House events on Saturdays this summer on July 16, July 30 and August 13. Free boats will depart for the island lighthouse at 10 am on each date from the Cutler Town Boat Launch. Children will be required to provide their own life jackets, however, life jackets will be provided for adults. Guests are advised that they might get their feet wet while boarding and departing the boats. Open House events are subject to being cancelled because of inclement weather.

Once declared by Maine Preservation as one of Maine 's Ten Most Endangered Historic Properties, the Little River Lighthouse Station was restored in recent years and is now under the care of the nonprofit Friends of Little River Lighthouse, which is a chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation.

While on the island people will be able to tour the restored keeper’s house, climb the tower, explore the island, and as Cynthia Rowden of the Friends groups says, “Enjoy the million dollar view. And, if we’re lucky, the seals may even put on a show, which they are known to do from time to time.”

Hot dogs, soda pop and water will be available and picnic tables are provided. Their will be live music on the island and the Friends of Little River will also have souvenir items available for purchase. All funds are used for the ongoing care and maintenance of lighthouse.
