Movies: The Conspirator

All the elements are here for a gripping drama: a presidential assassination, a dark conspiracy, a military tribunal.  So why does this earnest historical recreation of the post-Civil War era seem so flat?

“The Conspirator” centers around the trial of Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), whose Washington boarding house was the meeting place of John Wilkes Booth and his band of Confederate sympathizers in the weeks leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and simultaneous attempts on the lives of the Vice President and Secretary of State.

Commute Another Way Week set for May 16-20

Commute Another Way Week set for May 16-20

17th ANNUAL EVENT ASKS 'WHAT'S YOUR MPG'

Commuters who carpool, vanpool, ride transit, bike, walk or telecommute May 16 through 20 can double their miles per gallon – or better. With high gas prices hitting commuters hard in the pocketbook this spring, Commute Another Way Week is urging employers and commuters to work together to raise their MPG – and save a bundle on their daily commute.

“This is the 17th year we’ve held this event, and one thing that never stops drawing people in is the message about how much you can save when you drive alone to work less frequently,” says event organizer Carey Kish of the GO MAINE program.

The purpose of Commute Another Way Week is to let help Maine commuters learn more about carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking or riding transit, teleworking and other low-cost alternatives to the single-occupant vehicle.

Great Advances at the Dorcas Library in Prospect Harbor

Great Advances at the Dorcas Library in Prospect Harbor

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to let everyone know about some wonderful updates at the Dorcas Library in Prospect Harbor!

The library received a grant to update the library system itself a few months ago as I have mentioned before in a previous blog. This grant involves replacing the current book check-out system that is all done by hand currently. The new system is the upgraded bar code system that will make so much easier at the library with checking out a book, keeping track of books that are overdue, and connecting our library with the rest of the states libraries over the computer!

Currently, the system is being worked into the library with the help of their volunteers. Every book in the library has to be handled and have a bar code place in the book, then have it placed into the computer system. One wonderful advantage from the grant was the chance to get two laptops for the library.

Machias – The brainchild of two local nurses came to realization with the help of medical professionals, Dahl Chase Pathology Associates, Down East Community Hospital, and area CNA students.  Time, expertise, and facilities were donated to raise awareness of the high incidence rates of colorectal cancer for the women of Washington County by providing ten free colorectal screenings.  All of the women were uninsured and referred by their primary care provider because they met guidelines for needing a colorectal screening.

Karen Labonte and Erin Flannery, the two nurses who spearheaded the project, were excited and proud to work with the other volunteers and to be a part of helping those in need. “One patient called us into her room two different times to thank us. It was just a real morale booster,” exclaimed Karen.
