Christie Cantara: Honorary Red Sox Bat Girl!

Christie Cantara: Honorary Red Sox Bat Girl!

Christie Cantara celebrated Mother’s Day in a big way. She was the honorary bat girl for the Red Sox! Lindsey Laverriere, a friend of Christie’s daughter, entered her in the Major League Baseball 2013 Honorary Bat Girl Contest, which recognizes 30 women who have been affected by breast cancer. The winners were selected by fan votes on HonoraryBatGirl.com along with feedback from a guest judging panel. So there she was at the Red Sox game in Boston on Mother’s Day along with her family, boyfriend Tom, and, of course, Lindsey. Read more.

Pig Share!

Pig Share!

We are participating in a pig share this year!  There are four pigs in a large wooded area that is fenced in with electrical fence.  This allows them to root and dig and generally enjoy a very natural habitat.  It also cuts down on feed and odor as they spread their manure out over a wider area.  These pigs will be at market weight of 250 lbs or so by September when they will be taken to our local butcher for processing.

Movies: "The Great Gatsby"

Movies: "The Great Gatsby"

Poor F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Kicked out of Princeton.  Saw his early literary stardom go down the drain.  Wife Zelda committed to various mental institutions.  Dead of drink at the age of 44.  And now director Baz Luhrmann has even taken away his authorship of one of the greatest American novels.

It’s true.  As the new movie take on “The Great Gatsby” ends, we see the title page of the novel of the same title, attributed to the fictional character of Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire).  No wonder Dorothy Parker commented at Fitzgerald’s funeral, “The poor son of a bitch.”

Cancer battle doesn't stop choir director from sharing music

ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- This weekend the Acadia Choral Society will be holding its annual Spring Concert in Bar Harbor, and for the director of the group the music is going to sound that much sweeter.

Jamie Hagedorn has been the musical director of the society for the last five years. In January she got the devestating news that she had breast cancer.

Since then Hagedorn has been going for monthly chemo therapy sessions but she says thankfully she's experienced few side effects from the treatment.

Hagedorn is still leading the group and giving music lessons for dozens of area students and she says she's grateful that she can.
